Overview

The BMW 3-Series Sedan is a premium sedan that most of us are familiar with. It competes in one of the most popular premium segments in Malaysia that is occupied by the likes of Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, Lexus IS and ES, Infiniti Q50, Jaguar XE and Volvo V60. For 2018, there are only two variants to choose from.

All BMW 3 Series variants are equipped with turbocharged engines, and a ZF sourced eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear axle. Here’s a breakdown of the performance figures:

318i Luxury: The 318i is powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder that develops 136 hp at 4,500rpm and 220Nm of torque from 1,250rpm to 4,300rpm. 0-100km/h time comes in 8.9 seconds and top speed is 210km/h. This entry level sedan consumes 5.1-litres of fuel per 100km. Priced from RM205,800, key equipment include LED headlamp, 17-inch wheels with run-flat tyres, bright chrome exterior trim elements, gloss wood trim, electric seat adjustment with memory, sports-type steering wheel, 6.5-inch screen with iDrive controller and 6-speaker audio system, and drive mode selector.

330e M Sport: The 330e takes a 184hp / 290Nm 2.0-litre four-cylind and boosts it with electrification to generate a net system output of 252 hp and 420Nm. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and capable of maxing out at 225 km/h, the 330e is perhaps most noteworthy for its 37km all-electric cruising range (plug-in) and rated fuel consumption of 2.1 litres/100km. Priced from RM 258,800, key features in the 330e include M Sport aerodynamics kit (bumpers, and side skirts), 18-inch tyres in mixed sizes, gloss black exterior trim elements, aluminum trim with blue highlights, sports-type front seats, sports suspension and steering rack, tilt and slide moonroof, powered rear sunshade, head-up display, and 8.8-inch screen with 9-speaker audio system with navigation, and keyless entry system.

The 330e requires 2 to 3 hours to fully charge the lithium-ion battery in the boot. With the large battery placed in the boot, the space is reduced to just 370 litres, 110 litres less than the 318i. A smaller fuel tank of 41 litres is also the result of the hybrid component packaging. Thus, should your travelling pattern comprise of many continuous driving journeys, the 330e might require more stops for petrol refill.

All new BMW 3 series come with 5-year warranty with unlimited mileage, as well as free scheduled service up to 5 years or 100,000 kilometers. BMW also offers their BMW Connected Drive with Intelligent Emergency Call as standard.

BMW 330e - Best 3 series to date

There’s no doubt that the 330e is the pick of the of 3 Series range. The lightweight entry model 318i (RM202,800) with its three-cylinder engine is nimble and a joy to drive, but equipment levels are basic, lacking even keyless entry and reverse camera. Current generation 3 Series are generally more comfortable than the equivalent Mercedes-Benz C-Class variant. The 3 Series does all that while still maintaining BMW’s benchmark agility and handling.
