Overview

The 2017 BMW 4-Series range is made up of coupe, convertible and four-door gran coupe models, which are based on the mid-size 3 Series Sedan. For this latest generation BMW has decided to separate the 3 Series based coupes and convertibles into a new line up.

Offered here in three bodystyles - coupe, convertible and gran coupe, the 2016 4 Series models cost between RM299, 800 and RM742, 800. Rivals for this German coupe/convertibles come in the form of the Infiniti Q60, Lexus RC, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe and Convertible as well as the Audi A5 range.

Powertrain options for the BMW 4 Series models are carried over from the car it based on, the 3 Series, therefore all variants feature turbocharged engines and a ZF sourced eight-speed automatic transmission, except for the M4, which gets the carmaker's renowned M twin clutch transmission. Here is a rundown of the performance figures of each variant:

420i: Powering the entry level 420i variant is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 184hp and 270Nm of torque. The century sprint and top speed of this model is rated at 7.5 seconds and 236km/h respectively. The 420i is capable of returning a fuel consumption figure of 5.5-litres per 100km.

430i: The 430i gets the same 2.0-litre turbo four-pot found in the 420i, but with a boost in power. It now boasts 252hp and a peak torque of 350Nm. This mid-range variant is able to scoot from a standstill to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds with a top speed of 250km/h. Fuel economy and CO2 emission figures are 5.9-litre per 100km.

M4: The M4 is powered by a force fed inline-six cylinder mill that outputs 431 hp between 5,500 and 7,300 rpm and 550Nm of torque, which arrives at a low 1,850 rpm. This high-powered sports coupe hits 100 km/h in just a little over 4.1 seconds, while top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h.

BMW 428i Gran Coupe

Bought this car for the looks and sportiness and practicality. Arguably the prettiest of the BMW compact cars of the time. Decent performance, very very good handling courtesy of the stock lowered height and wider track compared to the 3-series I get hatchback practicality with the looks of the coupe. I have transported cupboards and shoe racks bought from Ikea just by folding the rear seats. The powered hatch opens wide to swallow bulky cargo. As mentioned, the car handles better than the equivalent 3-series and is pretty much reliable and due to its CBU status, build quality is rock solid. I put in approximately 1,000 kms a week, yes this car is a daily driver and play car and family car all-in-one. 0-100km/h is around 6 secs (it should be faster in a straight line and especially the corners now) courtesy of minor mods: full cold air-intake system, 6-pot 380mm Brembo brake system and Bilstein Adaptive absorbers) Driving on challenging roads, this car has no problem handling tight corners as it already has a very good handling and balanced platform from factory. To date, it’s been a wonderful ownership experience. Average fuel economy: 450km average on a full tabk with mixed driving. 0-100km/h: a shade under 6 seconds (stock car is 6 seconds) 5 stars for handling 5 stars for practicality in a compact car - Less
