Overview

Honda Malaysia’s contender in one of the most traditional segments in Malaysia is the Honda Civic sedan. It competes with other C-segment sedans like the Toyota Corolla Altis, Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Cerato, Proton Inspira, Renault Fluence, and Ford Focus Sedan. Priced from RM110,430, the Japanese sedan is sold in three variants- 1.8 S, 1.5 TC and 1.5 TC-P.

The base Civic features a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre SOHC i-VTEC mill, carried over from its predecessor, which is good for 141 PS and 174 Nm of torque. The other two more premium variants, however, feature the marque's brand new 1.5-litre four-cylinder VTEC Turbo engine that sends 173 PS and 220 Nm of torque to the front wheels.

The only transmission option available for the Malaysian-market Civic is a CVT-type transmission. Honda claims its new VTEC Turbo engine can offer a class-leading fuel consumption of 5.8 litres per 100km, while also being able to do the century sprint in a respectable 8.2 seconds.

The 1.8-litre variant meanwhile delivers a fuel consumption of 6.3 litres per 100km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds.

Standard features include 6 airbags, ESC with hill start assist, electric parking brake with hold function, powered driver's seat adjustment, cruise control and multi-angle reverse camera. Advanced features such as remote engine start, walk-away auto lock, full-colour multi-information display meter, and 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard across all variants.

While the 1.8 variant is fitted with 16-inch wheels, the 1.5 TC (from RM124,880) is fitted with 17-inch wheels with thinner 50-series tyres. The 1.5 TC also gets additional equipment which are shift paddles and leather upholstery.

The 1.5 TC-Premium, priced from RM131,880 only added very customer-specific items, which are LED headlamps and fog lamps, chrome door handles, GPS Navigation, and dual-zone automatic air conditioning.

All new Honda models come with a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty and even free labour fees at certain service intervals.

Honda Civic (FC) 1.5 VTEC Turbo – Progress Has A New Face

Driving on poorly maintained roads, the ones peppered by residual cement leaked from mixer trucks, broken strips of tarmac, uneven surfaces around manhole covers, the Civic soaks them up so well that we thought were in an Audi A3 – which Ito-san revealed that was one of the models the Civic was benchmarked against for ride and handling.
