Overview

After much teasing, and all the hype that usually surrounds Honda’s top-selling model in recent time – Honda Malaysia has launched the fifth-generation (5th-Gen) Honda City for the Malaysian market.

According to Honda, this new model raises the stakes for the City model and blurs the lines between the traditional B-Segment and premium-segment vehicles, courtesy of an advanced drivetrain, safety, and equipment technologies.

Building on the success and familiar traits of the outgoing model – the 5th-Gen Honda City is now longer by 111mm (4,553mm), wider by 54mm (1,748mm), and 10mm lower (at 1,467mm) compared to the predecessor – contributing to an overall growth in stature and crucially, cabin space for occupants.

For the first time ever – the City is also offered with two entirely different powertrains across its range. The more familiar Grade S, E, and V are powered by a new 1.5L DOHC (previously single-cam SOHC) i-VTEC powertrain, which produces a healthy 121PS of power and maximum torque of 145Nm. The engine is mated to a CVT-Type automatic transmission.

The halo RS e:HEV variant is powered by Honda’s cutting-edge intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) powertrain which combines an internal combustion (IC) engine with two electric motors, and a high-power Lithium-Ion battery pack.

First Drive: Honda City RS i-MMD - Blurring B-Segment Battle Lines

This step forward is very apparent when driving the new electrified City as it works quite differently to other hybrid powertrains. I knew it would offer up a different sensation, of course, but it still came as a surprise when the started car moving via the electric motor alone while the engine, essentially, is having no direct impact on the spinning wheels. See, the i-MMD system utilises two electric motors: the Traction Motor, and a smaller electric generator. Sandwiched between these core components are the battery array of 48 lithium-ion cells and the 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle i-VTEC naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. What’s important to keep in mind here is how they work in synergy.

Good performance but poor QC

Plan to get X50 but because x50 unable to get this year then force to get honda city Honda city V spec has good engine power and nice interior. However, except for City RS spec, other city had no much safety feature like blindspot, 360, poor camera etc. (At least for vios and almera got blindspot and ADAS feature) Honda lane watch quite useless for me. When in night when-turn on the camera. The sudden change of light brightness will causing eye unwell for driver moreover the camera quality quite sucks and it will temporary disable your gps if you use apple car play Moreover, for my city which has get almost a month has faced some installation defect which QC did not function well before coming out from factory. For example, front engine bonnet has big gap which causing Water go inside engine bay Weird sound from everywhere also i drive along old klang road for a month (i think everybody should know old klang road conditions) Front passenger door cannot be closed properly when closed lightly and etc Anyway, still dont know RS condition but wont buy honda in the future👍 - Less

Quite a good car

Interior seats feel quite good, they're fairly soft. Lots of legroom in the back. Personally, I found that front passenger legroom is a little small, but that could just be my long legs. The infotainment system can be a bit troublesome when trying to pair bluetooth devices, but once connected it works flawlessly. The available USB port built into the infotainment system doesn't have a high enough output to charge mobile devices, and the three 12v sockets also have trouble charging up devices. - Less
