Overview

If you want big, get it in a big way, that’s what I say. And if you want a gigantic MPV to move the family and more around that doesn’t break the bank, then the Hyundai Grand Starex should be on top of your list.

The Grand Starex carries 11 occupants (2-3-3-3) and kids do love the space, and the large LCD screen for cartoons helps too. The outer seats on the second row have swiveling function too. Should the occupants require a walkway through the centre, the middle seats in row-2 and row-3 can fold up to create a centre aisle.

If there are only 8 occupants, the bench for the fourth row of seats tips up and slides to yield more space for luggage. Occupants also have ceiling mounted air conditioning vents and independent control.

The Grand Starex undergone a facelift in 2016, sporting gigantic and complex surfaced new grille, LED running lights in the side mirrors, new infotainment unit with navigation, leather seats, new wheel design and passenger-side powered doors (that's the left door). The latter, fitted only in the Premium version, is overdue and with a selling price of RM164,088, is good value-for-money. There is also an option to have the right door powered.

The 2.5 litre turbo diesel outputs 170 PS and 392 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed torque converter automatic and sends traction to the rear wheels.

Other competitors in this large MPV segment are the Maxus G10 from Westar, Ford Transit and Nissan NV350 Urvan, the latter two have commercial van origins than MPV. The Grand Starex is a favourite among local tour operators due to its value pricing and comfortable seating for all occupants.

Safety features are basic- 2 airbags and ESC. Similar to other Hyundai passenger vehicles, the Grand Starex comes with a five-year or 300,000 km warranty.
