Range Rover Evoque 2021-2022 Review
In the case of many luxury brands, there is always the necessity to update and reinvent themselves in order to stay relevant and with the times, and at times that becomes a tricky balance between attracting newer and younger customers, and maintaining their long established customer base that have championed the brand over the years.
But this doesn’t always have to be the case. With Land Rover, this is best represented by the fact that their range of products is as diverse, granular, and focused as it has always been, but they have also managed to introduce newer products while maintaining the standards and philosophy of their staple models.
What exactly does this mean? Land Rover has their hard-core offroad vehicles like the Land Rover Defender, but they also maintain the full fat Range Rover as well, albeit with numerous technological improvements but keeping the broad strokes the same. This is in contrast to their newest products, such as the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Velar. These two models had no history on which to fall back on, and the flip side of this is a clean slate.
The Range Rover Evoque is in its second generation now, but the journey that it took has been far from simple. The first generation of this luxury crossover SUV was brought into the world in 2011, and we cannot emphasize how much of a gamble this was for an established and storied brand like Land Rover.
Up until the launch of the Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover was known either for having the most rugged and hardy off-road vehicle, and massive SUVs that became the choice of celebrities the world over. Sales of these models alone weren’t nearly enough for a company to drum up research and development funding in order to update their product range, and so they needed something slightly more mass market.
That’s essentially what the Range Rover Evoque represented. New, young, fresh blood in the Land Rover fraternity, with the freedom to be whatever the designers chose without having to worry about driving existing customers away. As far as successes in product planning and development goes, the Range Rover Evoque is definitely near the top.
So popular was this model that it spawned three-door variants as well as convertible variants that were in production for a short amount of time. By 2018, the first generation was due for a successor – and that’s the Range Rover Evoque that you see here today. While the product may have been knew, Land Rover’s approach to a full model change was somewhat typical of the brand.
What we mean by this is the fact that this second generation Range Rover Evoque looks fairly similar to the first generation – at least if you squint your eyes a bit Despite this , the car has gone through a complete redesign and rework underneath the metal, sitting on an entirely new platform and packing a far more modern interior layout.
The Range Rover Evoque has been in our market for a relatively short amount of time, but even so it has been made available in two different petrol engine variants. This has carried on until today, and while it may not be the cheapest on the Land Rover pricelist, it certainly is a far more approachable point of entry than even the Range Rover Velar.
Range Rover Evoque 2021-2022 Specifications
There are two variants of the Range Rover Evoque available in Malaysia, and they are – like most of the products in the Land Rover range – powered by the Ingenium series of engines. In this case they both come with 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines, but as the names suggest the 2.0 200 PS variant makes 200 PS and 320 Nm of torque, while the 2.0 R-Dynamic 249PS makes 249 PS and 365 Nm of torque. They both split power across all four wheels through a nine-speed conventional automatic transmission.
Unlike most of the other Land Rover products, the Range Rover Evoque has its engine mounted transversely – as in like most front-wheel driven cars, with the engine and transaxle sitting across the front end. This is because while it may no longer be based on the same Ford Mondeo platform the first generation was based on, it still makes more sense from a packaging perspective.
In terms of dimensions, the Range Rover Evoque measure in at 4,371 mm long, 2,100 mm wide inclusive of the mirrors, and 1,649 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,681 mm. The loadspace volume in the boot comes in at 472 litres, with the space expandidng to 1,383 litres once you drop the rear seats. If you find yourself having to traverse deep waters, the Range Rover Evoque has a wade depth of up to 600 mm.
Range Rover Evoque 2021-2022 Exterior
Between the two variants of the Range Rover Evoque on sale, there are fairly minor differences – largely down to the fact that the higher spec variant comes in the R-Dynamic guise. Both variants get flush deployable door handles and premium LED headlights, as well as 20-inch wheels – just in different designs for each one. The R-Dynamic package adds on copper bonnet louvres and side vents, as well as dark satin grey rear bumpers with a body coloured valance, and copper exhaust finishers.
Range Rover Evoque 2021-2022 Interior
On the inside of the Range Rover Evoque is there you begin to see where the appeal of a Range Rover is. Perforated grained leather seats and light oyster morzine headlining with gradated linear bright aluminium trim finishers are present in the entry level model, while the R-Dynamic variant swaps these items for perforated duo-toned grained leather, gradated linear dark aluminium trim, and ebony morzine headlining.
Range Rover Evoque 2021-2022 Safety Features
All variants of the Range Rover Evoque get items like lane keep assist, driver condition monitor, and your usual alphabet soup of safety aids like ABS, EBD, and brake assist. Where the R-Dynamic variant stands out is the addition of ClearSight GorundView (an excellent item to have when navigating rough terrain offroad), as well as Adaptive Cruise Control and high-speed emergency braking. Surprisingly there’s also blind spot assist that isn’t included in the regular variant.
Range Rover Evoque 2021-2022 Strengths & Weakness
Prestige, sophisticated off-roading technology, and eye-catching design. These are the strengths of the Range Rover Evoque, although it’s largely the first and third items on the list that are the justification for the brunt of Range Rover Evoque buyers. It’s perhaps a little saddening that the excellent off-road aptitude will rarely be put to the test, but such is the nature of the modern SUV.
Beyond this, however, there are other products for a similar price or less that can deliver on a similar level, if not slightly better in some areas. Luxury SUVs are a highly competitive market, with so many options to choose from that it comes down to brand preference and particular nuances of each one that may or may not suit your lifestyle.

Review: 2020 Range Rover Evoque - The Baby Of The Range
The interior, while dark in tone and nature, exudes a very European feel with the choice of materials and the precision in manufacturing. Front and centre for the driver is a 12.3-inch digital instrument display that lets you configure it in a variety of fashions - whether you want trip information to share screen space with engine and speed telemetry, or you even prefer to have navigation occupy the entire screen. It's a slick and fairly intuitive system, operated by steering-wheel mounted switches. Reproducing sounds for your aural pleasure is an 11-speaker, 380-watt Meridian sound system that pairs with the 10-inch entertainment head unit. Sound quality is acceptable for the class, and the head unit is capable of Android Auto and Apple Car Play connectivity. In tandem with that is a secondary screen below that offers control of both climate control and the various drive modes for the vehicle. There is also a 360-degree view camera system and a nifty little virtual view for the front camera that displays what should be directly underneath the engine bay, allowing for better maneuvering off-road.
