Punchy engine that feels sporty, well matched with transmission GVC reduces body roll, better comfort too Top variant has advanced driving assist systems

Mazda’s entry to the C-segment is the Mazda3. Similar to the Mazda2 sibling, it is offered here in both sedan and hatchback guise. The Mazda3 is only the second Mazda model that is locally-assembled in Malaysia, with the other being the Mazda CX-5.

The Mazda3 is still powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine when many of its competitors are moving to downsized-turbocharging setup for higher outputs and lower fuel consumption.

Competition for this model comes in the form of the Honda Civic, Volkswagen Golf/Jetta, Toyota Corolla Altis, Peugeot 308/408 THP, Hyundai Elantra, and Ford Focus.

The Mazda3 is powered by a direct-injected 2.0-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engine that delivers 162 hp and 210 Nm of torque. Power is channelled to a 6-speed torque converter-type automatic with manual mode.

The Mazda3 sedan is still the lowest priced 2.0-litre, with a starting price of RM110,226. Standard features include 16-inch wheels with 205/60 tyres, idle start-stop system, GVC, halogen head lamps, halogen tail lamps, electronic parking brake, manual air conditioning, fabric seats, MZD 7-inch infotainment system with touchscreen, Bluetooth streaming audio, 6 speakers, and 60:40-split folding rear seats with a folding armrest.

Safety features in the entry-level sedan include 6 airbags, ESP, hill start assist, and reverse camera.

The High Spec Mazda3 sedan, priced from RM125,226 meanwhile comes with 18-inch wheels with 215/45 tyres, LED head lamps with automatic function, LED tail lamps, rain sensing wipers, keyless entry, premium meter cluster with central tachometer and head-up display, paddle shift switches, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power adjustable driver’s seat, leather seat upholstery, automatic air conditioning, and the Advance Safety Technology package that includes: adaptive headlamps, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Mazda3 Hatchback only comes in the High Spec variant and is priced at RM3,000 more than the sedan, from RM128,226.

All new Mazda vehicles are entitled to a 5 Years/100,000km Manufacturing Warranty and 3 Years/60,000km Free Maintenance according to manufacturer’s standards. Mazda customers will enjoy an absolute 3-year free scheduled maintenance; including labour, parts, and lubricants.

2015 Mazda 3 SkyActiv Full Review - The Hero You Know

I won’t make any bones about the fact that Mazdas have always carried with them a certain weight of responsibility with each iteration. Over the years, the mention of this particular Japanese marque has conditioned us to expect something more, but also distinctive, and in some key areas, markedly better.
