Mazda’s answer to mid-size SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail, Subaru Forester, Kia Sportage, Mitsubishi ASX, and the Hyundai Tucson, is the CX-5 that features the carmaker’s signature Kodo design inspired looks and various Skyactiv technologies.

Bermaz Motors, the distributor of Mazda models in Malaysia offers the Japanese SUV in four variants with prices starting at RM135,266 (OTR without insurance) for the entry-level 2.0 2WD GL version. For those who prefer more engine power, the 2.5 2WD petrol variant carries a price tag of RM161,657.

Powertrain continues with the two petrol engines and 6-speed automatic transmission – a 162 hp Skyactiv-G 2.0 and 192 hp Skyactiv-G 2.5. Both the 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol CX-5 variants are available in only two-wheel drive guise.

The range-topping CX-5 in Malaysia is the 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D four-cylinder turbodiesel mill that churns out 175hp at 4,500rpm and 420Nm of torque. The Skyactiv-D CX-5 can be had in either front wheel or all-wheel drive form. All engines are coupled to Mazda’s six-speed torque converter type automatic transmission. Idle start/stop is a standard feature in all Skyactiv engines.

The comfort and convenience items in the 2.0 GL variant include 17-inch wheels, reverse camera, 6 airbags, electric parking brake with hold function, LED headlights with halogen DRL, bulb-type taillamp, fabric seats, dual zone air conditioning with rear duct, standard meter display, 7-inch MZD display infotainment with controller, and 40-20-40 split folding rear seats with 2-stage reclining backrest.

Both the 2.0 and 2.5 GLS variants add LED headlights with adaptive function, LED DRL, LED tail lamps, keyless entry, powered driver's seat adjustment, leather upholstery, Smart City Brake Support, blind spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2.5 GLS gets 19-inch wheels in-line with the more powerful engine output.

The flagship of the CX-5 model, the 2.2 Skyactiv-D comes with the full i-Activesense advanced driving assistance system which are lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, drowsiness detection, and Smart City Brake Support with reverse protection.

All new Mazda CX-5 comes with 3 years or 60,000 km (whichever comes first) free maintenance package and backed by 5 years or 100,000 km mileage manufacturer's warranty (whichever comes first).

All-New Mazda CX-5 2.0 GL GVC – An SUV Should Not Be This Fun

In short, engineers at Mazda has managed to pull off the impossible; adding more sound deadening material without sacrificing its ‘jinba-ittai’ appeal. Then there’s the ride comfort. Mazda has done a good job with the new CX-5, as the new model boasts similar, if not better, driving dynamics. Body control is superior than other SUVs in its segment, as the rear of the SUV reacts instantaneously to steering inputs.
