Overview

Mazda’s entry to the B-segment class is the Mazda 2. It is offered here in both sedan and hatchback guise with a 1.5-litre engine and a new starting price of RM74,867 for the very-recently introduced MID spec and RM87,586 for the full spec. Although this compact car commands a premium price compared to its rivals, its specification list so impressive that it will put some other cars in the higher segments to shame.

Competition for this model comes in the form of the Honda City/Jazz, Kia Rio, Toyota Vios, Nissan Almera, Volkswagen Vento/Polo, Ford Fiesta, and the Peugeot 208 Puretech.

The Mazda 2 is powered by a direct-injected 1.5-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engine that outputs 114hp at 6,000rpm and 148Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. Power is channelled to the front wheels via a Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, as featured on all locally sold Mazda Skyactiv models.

The recently introduced MID spec is competitively equipped against the Honda City/Jazz and Toyota Vios rivals. Standard features include 15-inch wheels with 185/65 tyres, LED front fog lights, power folding side mirrors, idle start-stop, manual air-conditioning, fabric seats, urethane steering wheel with audio control, 4-speaker audio system, GVC (cornering stability function) and Sport mode.

Advanced features that are included in both premium spec sedan and hatchback include a head-up display (HUD) with premium meter cluster (central tachometer with digital speedometer), leather upholstery and steering wheel wrapping, paddle shift, automatic air-conditioning, MZD 7-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth streaming audio and 6 speakers, and a reverse camera.

All new Mazda vehicles are entitled to a 5 Years/100,000km Manufacturing Warranty and 3 Years/60,000km Free Maintenance according to manufacturer’s standards. Mazda customers will enjoy an absolute 3-year free scheduled maintenance; including labour, parts, and lubricants.

    2017 Mazda 2 - Jinba Ittai Goodness

The interior has been carefully designed and engineered to the extent that in a blind test, one would be hard pressed trying to differentiate the Mazda 2 from a premium saloon, thanks to the company’s extensive usage of high quality materials.

A good driver's car for both daily and weekend.

Engine Performance: Should be one of the best 1.5L NA engine in the market. Power delivery is linear, instant pick up in speed with the good amount of torque from this high compression engine. Fuel Economy: Powerful engine yet still providing excellent fuel economy. RM70 Ron95 able to provide me around 500km mileage for normal daily usage with 50/50 highway and city drive, which included around 1 hour traffic jam daily in MRR2 highway. (**I never use the i-stop system, i turn it off after i started the car engine) Handling: Should be one of the best handling car in stock form out there in the market. Very enjoyable to drive in b road, I do genting run often in this car. Just the stock tyre is not grippy enough and the stock tyre profile is just too big which resulted in too much body roll. Anyway, changing a wider set of rim for better tyre option will solve the issue for even better handling. Space: Definitely the weakest point of this car compare to the competitors, rear passenger space is small, boot space is small. Good for those who enjoy driving on their own without the needs of fetching people everyday. Well I do still hope the car is bigger. Design: I love the car design for my personal preference. Especially the interior design is very modern. Each part of the interior which driver will touch everyday are designed with good material and good aesthetics. No complaint at all. Safety: The car is stable on highspeed even while sweeping the higheay corners. It does come with basic safety system nowadays. However it lacks of front parking sensor, blind spot monitoring system which i find it could be very useful to have while driving. I recommend this car for those who mostly drive their car with maximum of 2 person sitting at the front. Long journey with 5 person is this car can be uncomfortable for rear passenger.

Mazda 2 - affordable luxury

Don’t take my word for it. You’ll notice the difference when you compare the car of the same segment. The architect for this car has nicely lay out the interior, minimalist design yet feel sophisticated. There’s a lot of leather usage (so much more compare to the car of the same segment) around the dashboard, centre console, side panels / doors, your half-bucket seating (it hugs you comfortably). The red stitching on the black leather makes the car feel sporty and young, while not aggressively done, it is pleasing to the eyes, you might have mistaken this car for A-class. The Head-up Display, while it is much like a gimmick, I kind of rely on it after four years of driving this car. The Architect must have thought about this too, where your line of sight on your cruising speed, your audio entertainment screen, all aligned without having you to leave your sight from the road. For audiophile, you will find the 6 speakers make your trip much more enjoyable. Deep bass, high note, this car can manage all types of genre and you’ll fall in love again with that song you previously like, in this car. About the drivetrain, if you love having instance response to your feet, this car will not fail you. Flick the ‘sport’ button next to the gear shaft, you’ll understand why they say this is a driver oriented car. Well, this car is not perfect though. With only 2 airbags, you must make sure collision happen only from the front or back, and not from the side (but of course, drive safe please). Jump to the back row, again this car will remind you that this is a driver oriented car. For average male height of 172cm, the back seat feel kind of tight for me. When you are young and still dating, this car will justify your status. When you have kids, you’ll need to take the space of the back seat into consideration.

Good performance, agile, fuel efficient but..

Low spec for safety, poor NVH, parts hard to find/takes time and of course a bit expensive compare to other competitor since its mazda not your average toyota n honda.
