Overview

The Mitsubishi ASX (Active Sports Crossover) is a compact crossover that competes with the likes of Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, and Subaru XV. Built with the aim to combine the practicality of an SUV with the agility and fuel-efficiency of a hatchback, its available in Malaysia in three variants with prices starting off at RM119,100 for the 2WD and goes up to RM134,300 for the top of the range 4WD variant.

Under the hood lies a 2.0-litre 16-Valve DOHC MIVEC engine that produces 150 PS at 6,000 rpm and 197 Nm of torque at 4,20 0rpm, which enables the car to achieve a top speed of 190 km/h. Power is put to the road through an INVECS-III Continuously Variable Transmission with 6-step Sports Mode.

Apart from the 4WD system which has a centre locking mode as wheel as automatic 4WD mode, this variant also includes niceties such as panoramic glass roof, magnesium paddle shift, cruise control and push start button.

7-airbags and ESC are only available in the 4WD variant, while the 2WD variants have 2 frontal airbags plus a driver's knee airbag.

Enhanced 2015 Mitsubishi ASX Review – New Tricks from the Old Horse

For its size, the ASX provides four adult passengers with the comforts of good head and leg room. That this comes despite the vehicle’s amazingly short rear overhang that has to provide space for a fuel tank, independent rear suspension, rear driveshaft, and a full-sized spare tyre is impressive packaging.

Tough, safe little car with 4WD

The first thing that's noticeable with this car is the full length sunroof, which isn't used often but when used gives a more relaxed feel to your drive. The interior design is dark and neat, with leather seats and a more sturdy feeling steering wheel and gear shift than the HRV. The 4WD option comes in handy when you have to unexpectedly drive over muddy or rocky ground. Having to manoeuvre around a lorry in a friends driveway recently and being forced to drive up a steep, muddy embankment, it was nice to have a push from behind as the 4WD kicked in. I would have been stuck otherwise. The 4WD comes in two modes depending on what surface you want to drive on. The downsides are the engine and stereo head unit. The engine feels unrefined and makes a lot of noise when under load. It pulls hard and it has a paddle shift option in the transmission, but the engine noise is not a good kind of loud. As for the head unit. The sound quality has some depth, it plays dvds and the reverse camera is very clear however, it runs on Android with 512mb ram and is quite slow and buggy. With the original software installed, every few engine starts will cause the head unit to reset itself which is bad news if you want to use the reverse camera straight away. However, it is based on the Clarion AX1 head unit and its software can be downloaded onto this head unit for a less buggy experience. I've had the car for 3 years and over all i'm quite happy with it. It has ISOFIX for the baby, the 4WD has proven itself and i've taken it across the country more than a couple of times. It's been comfortable, efficient and small enough to squeeze through and park in small places without feeling too small on the inside. Happy driver.
