Overview

The Nissan Almera belongs in the B-segment and rivals models such as the Volkswagen Vento, Toyota Vios, Mazda 2 Sedan, Honda City, Kia Rio Sedan, and Proton Persona. Edaran Tan Chong Motors (ETCM), the official distributors of Nissan models in Malaysia, is offering three variants of the Almera for us here. The 1.5E Manual carries a starting price of RM68,500, the automatic transmission version at RM72,200 while the top of the range variant, the 1.5VL Auto at RM82,000.

All Almera variants are powered by the 1.5-litre HR15DE inline-four engine. Power output is rated at 102 PS at 6,000 rpm and 139 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The entry level model is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission, while the other three variants rely on a four-speed automatic gearbox to send power to the ground.

15-inch alloy wheels wrapped with 185/65 series tires, chrome door handles, fabric wrapped black coloured interior, multi information display, reverse sensors, a basic four-speaker audio system and a large rear arm rest are standard across the range. Bells and whistles exclusive for the top of the line Almera 1.5 VL variant are smart entry on the front doors, push button ignition, a multi-function steering wheel, Finevision backlit meters, temperature display and automatic air-conditioning.

In terms of safety all models are fitted with ISOFIX anchor points, anti-theft alarm, an immobilizer system and ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as standard. The 1.5 E Manual and Automatic come only with a driver airbag, while the higher spec 1.5 V and VL are fitted with two airbags.

The Almera scores 4 stars in ASEAN NCAP rating, as it does not have ESC-feature for a full 5-star rating.

Other notable features in the Almera include 7-year warranty with unlimited mileage, easy-to-use automatic air conditioning system and stylish LED DRL.

ETCM offers various options for the Nissan Almera including combination leather upholstery, a Nismo aero bodykit, window tinting film, upgraded infotainment systems as well as a RM14,000 NISMO performance package that consists of a front and rear bumper spoiler, side skirts, trunk lid spoiler, 16-inch alloy wheels with Continental tyres, a sports exhaust muffler, and a sports suspension system (coil springs and shock absorbers).

2015 Nissan Almera Facelift 1.5L VL Review - Can A Facelift Lift its Fortunes?

From the moment we got behind the wheel of the Almera, it becomes clear that the Almera has been imbued with a comfort-oriented nature. With its soft sprung suspension, the Almera glides with relative ease over bumps, while its plush seats offer plenty of cushioning, and its long wheelbase lends it a settled ride quality.
