Perodua Axia 2021-2022 Review

If you wanted to talk about the most affordable car in Malaysia, the Perodua Axia is the model that would sit at the very top of that list. What would be more surprising, however, is just how broad the range of variants is for the most compact hatchback that Perodua offers. From the base spec 1.0G Manual to the range-topping 1.0 AV, you can almost certainly find an Axia that fits your lifestyle at the right price.

The Perodua Axia was a huge step forward for Perodua as it replaced their aging range of ultra-compact Kei-based cars like the Perodua Kancil and Kelisa. What was surprising was that not only was it of a much higher build quality and with a bigger emphasis on design and materials, it also was surprisingly large on the inside – almost putting it on par with the Perodua Myvi of the time.

Following the success of the Perodua Axia, the second Malaysian car company went on to develop the Bezza – effectively a sedan version of the Axia built on the same backbones, and very much aimed at those who need that extra boot space. Even so, the launch of the Bezza hardly put a dent in the take rate of the Axia – read on to find out why Malaysians love it so much.

Perodua Axia 2021-2022 Specifications

Through the entire Perodua Axia range, there is but one singular petrol engine option in the form of the 1KR-VE – a three cylinder, 1.0-litre, DOHC engine with VVT-i. Outputs are a reasonable 67 hp and 91 Nm of torque, going to the front wheels through either a five-speed manual gearbox (in the sole 1.0 E Manual option), or a four-speed conventional automatic transmission.

This may not sound like a lot of power, but it’s important to remember that the Perodua Axia weighs between 825 kilograms and 860 kilograms depending on the variant you choose. That results in a reasonable power to weight ratio – although you can’t really expect fire-breathing performance from an entry-level budget model.

Despite being the cheapest car you can buy, it isn’t actually the smallest in the country. The Perodua Axia wheelbase stands at 2,455 mm – a little shorter than a Proton Saga, but a solid 55 mm longer than a Kia Picanto. In terms of overall length, it’s 3,645 mm long and 1,620 mm wide – once again roughly 50 mm larger than a Picanto in every dimension. What’s more interesting is the Axia’s wheelbase is a little longer than a second-generation Perodua Myvi, but shorter than the current generation Perodua Myvi.

In the seven years that the Perodua Axia has been in production, it has gone through two facelifts – once back in 2017 which brought revised front grills and bumpers, as well as an external boot release. More recently in 2019 was another redesign as well as the addition of the GXtra, STYLE, and AV variants. The styling has been more streamlined across the range, with the SE variant getting some extra accents in the front grille.

While the majority of Perodua Axia variants look as you would expect – a compact hatchback – it is the STYLE variant that stands out with its decorative body cladding, as well as trim pieces on the front and rear bumper that look a little like underbody guards. There are also faux roof rails that help to complete the look of a compact crossover – though the STYLE variant is no different mechanically or physically to the other Axia models.

On the whole there isn’t a great deal of change between the facelifts of the Perodua Axia, but it is a functional interior that accommodates everything from the base spec 1.0 E Manual model with practically nothing in it but a steering wheel, shift lever, and instrument cluster – all the way to the top-of-the-line 1.0 AV model that packs a full-on multimedia head unit with navigation and smart link.

Affordability comes with sacrificing some of the creature comforts. At the thin end of the range, you get a plastic steering wheel, fabric seats, unpainted door handles, a pair of front cup holders, and an unpainted centre cluster. Top spec gives you uprated fabric seats, chrome door handles, a rear cupholder and a multi-purpose container, a painted centre cluster, and even mildly body-hugging front seat designs.

You don’t go into Perodua Axia ownership expecting the most luxurious materials and finishes, but you certainly won’t be left feeling sore and uncomfortable. Perodua knows how to build vehicles that are accommodating, holistically.

Perodua Axia 2021-2022 Safety Features

You wouldn’t expect any car at this price point to come with much in the way of safety, but the 2019 facelift of the Perodua Axia brought the Advanced Safety Assist 2.0 system that comes with the top-spec 1.0 AV variant of the Axia. For the unfamiliar, the system adds pre-collision braking up to 80 km/h, pre-collision warning up to 100 km/h, pedestrian detection up to 50 km/h, and a couple of other alerts.

There also happens to be Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) included as part of the equipment package from the GXtra variant and up, providing a passive safety system that has become the minimum standard for NCAP safety ratings the world over. While VSC is not meant to make you invincible, it can account for momentary lapses in judgement of the conditions.

Perodua Axia 2021-2022 Strengths and Weaknesses

There are many reasons to love the Perodua Axia – the simplicity in design and operation, the extremely low running costs and purchase price, and the impressive amount of interior space for the money you have to fork out. There’s no doubt that Perodua has elevated the quality of life for many by offering the Axia as it is, and it is more than a worth successor to its shoebox-sized predecessors.

But the Axia is not necessarily a car that has aged well, and we don’t mean any disrespect by this. When the Axia came out, it was a car that was surprisingly on par with the Myvi of the time, but with the launch of the third generation Myvi (and models like the Ativa) it became clear that the Axia would need to go through a major overhaul to keep up with the new standards Perodua has set.

Perodua Axia 2021-2022 Price

With the current exemptions for tax in place, having a Perodua Axia in your name starts at jut RM 23,367 for the base-spec 1.0 E Manual variant. As you go up the range, the 1.0 G goes for RM 32,485, the 1.0 GXtra goes for RM 33,940, the STYLE goes for RM 37,515 – same as the 1.0 SE, and the range-topping 1.0 AV runs you RM 41,427.

If you’re wondering whether there’s any overlap with the Perodua Myvi, you would be right: the 1.3 G Manual variant of the Myvi starts at RM 41,292 – but that’s about it. It’s clever positioning and a good spread on the part of Perodua – whether you choose to have that little bit more space from a larger car, or the full suite of safety systems is entirely up to you.

Perodua Axia 2021-2022 Features

If you were to pick the entry level Perodua Axia, you really wouldn’t get much in the way of features – it has power windows at the very least, but no central locking. Thankfully all other variants do get central locking, although small items like a grab handle and rear speakers come with the GXtra variant or better. Reverse sensors are also added for the GXtra, and driver-side seat height adjustment.

The Style, SE, and AV variants all get fairly similar levels of equipment. They all have keyless entry and start, and the highest specification of the multi-info display, Where the AV really justifies its price is with the aforementioned head unit, front corner parking sensors, a steering wheel with audio controls, and a reverse camera.

Perodua Axia 2021-2022 Fuel Consumption

Would it surprise you at all to know that the Perodua Axia is an incredibly efficient vehicle – especially with the new VVT-i implemented in the engine? The sole manual variant sets the best rating for fuel consumption at 22.5 kilometres per litre, while all other variants are quoted as setting 21.6 kilometres per litre – impressive for a car that has no turbocharger or hybrid systems to assist it.

    Perodua Axia 1.0G Review

    There’s an immediate sense space when you first open the door and sit inside the Axia, one that never quite leaves you fully as accepted fact. How can a car this small on the outside feel so airy inside? A mixture of clever packaging, material choices, and an omission of thick trim pieces are certainly at play here.
