Perodua Alza 2022-2023 Review

After 13 long years, Perodua officially replaced the first generation Alza with the second generation on July 12, 2022-2023. This is Perodua's second model built on Daihatsu's New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform, which allows the MPV to be equipped with many new features, including a level two autonomous system at an affordable price.

The all-new Alza is almost as large as the Perodua Aruz, but it is technically more advanced, better equipped, has a newer and slightly more powerful engine/drivetrain, and comes with active safety features on all variants. In terms of being a value proposition, there are not many MPVs out there that can challenge the Perodua Alza, including Perodua's very own Aruz.

Perodua Alza 2022-2023 Specifications

The engine used in the second generation Alza is the same 1.5L 2NR-VE engine used in the Perodua Myvi. The engine has been tuned to produce an output of 106 PS and 138 Nm of torque and is mated to a D-CVT transmission which helps with fuel economy. Perodua claims the 2022-2023 Perodua Alza is capable of returning between 18.9km/l and 22 km/l.

The 2022-2023 Perodua Alza is 205 mm longer, 35 mm wider and 50 mm higher than the previous Alza. In addition to being bigger, the 2022-2023 Alza also comes with more advanced exterior features including:

-16 inch rims (H and AV)

-Folding side mirrors (H and AV)

-Rear disc brakes (AV)

The length of the Alza's cabin is now 2,765 mm, which is 115 mm longer compared to the outgoing model. The length of the second row seats has also increased to 240 mm, which is 90 mm longer than before.

In addition, the interior of the 2022-2023 Alza is now equipped with:

-Air conditioning vents at the rear

-9-inch infotainment display with Apple Carplay and Android Auto (H and AV)

-Electronic parking brake (AV)

-7-inch TFT meter display (H and AV)

Perodua Alza 2022-2023 Safety Features

Because the 2022-2023 Alza rides on the DNGA platform, the MPV's safety level has improved. This includes better protection for occupants due to better body rigidity. Asean NCAP testers also found that the Alza "remained stable and provided good protection to the occupants" during the frontal offset test (which is basically a head-on collision test). They also found that during the side impact test, the driver and passengers had adequate protection. As the platform is lighter and stronger, factors such as vibration and noise have also been reduced.

All variants come standard across the range with passive safety features such as 6 airbags, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control, and parking sensors. But it doesn't end there because the new Alza is the latest vehicle in Perodua's lineup to get Perodua's Smart Drive Assist (PSDA) as a standard feature, which includes:

Perodua Alza 2022-2023 Strengths & Weakness

Value for money and reliability are always going to be strong suits for any Perodua model, especially with a car like the Alza that is used for both hauling the family back to hometowns during long public holidays, or used as a workhorse for transporting passengers or cargo. The flexibility in seating and storage space, as well as a wide rear aperture, allow for easy loading and unloading of larger cargo items. The fresh new exterior and interior design have also helped with the appeal of the Alza which no longer makes it feel like a budget MPV. The standard safety features on the 2022-2023 Alza is also a game changer, which many will find difficult to beat.

Where the Perodua Alza is lacking is ultimately in its performance. While the 1.5-litre 2NR-VE petrol engine is still a fine choice due to its fuel-sipping properties, it's mostly an acceptable level of performance rather than anything spectacular.

That's an impressive list of safety features, especially when you consider what you are getting it in the base car, the Alza 1.5L X, which costs only RM62,500.

The Adaptive Driving Beam is actually an exciting bit of kit. It's more sophisticated than the regular headlight found on the base variant and is standard for the H and AV models.The Matrix headlights utilises the windscreen camera on the Alza to virtually allow you to have your high beams on all the time.
