Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Review

As far as French brands go, Peugeot has a pretty strong presence in Malaysia, developed over the years with a variety of models that had varying degrees of reputation. However, one model made a pretty strong showing for Peugeot, in addition to being the first of its kind – it was the Peugeot 3008, and it represented Peugeot’s first crossover SUV model.

To understand why this model is particularly important and special, you need to realize that the French are extremely stubborn when it comes to their automobiles. Hatchbacks have been pretty much the bread and butter of the brand, and even until the mid 2010s you could argue that their automatic transmission were pretty awful (the manual take-up rate in Europe is extremely high, so automatic transmissions don’t get much love).

So for such a stubborn brand to develop a crossover SUV, it means that they really have to see the value and point in having such a model in their fleet. The first generation Peugeot 3008 was launched back in 2008, sharing its chassis with the larger Peugeot 5008 and Citroen C4. In 2017, the second generation saw its local introduction here with a vast number of updates and upgrades over its predecessor, including a new platform.

When this generation of Peugeot 3008 was introduced here, it initially was available in two variants. Over the years it has been pared down to just one variant, and there is actually a global facelift that’s due for launch pretty soon. Since Peugeot has changed hands in the last year or so, it’s understandable that the brand may take a bit of time to get back on its feet and pushing newer products.

Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Specifications

Turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engines are to Peugeot as butter is to toast – it’s become such a common and expected combination that it would be weird to see anything else. This powertrain in various states of tune comes in everything from the Peugeot 208 GTI to the Peugeot 508 – and in the case of the Peugeot 3008 it makes 167 PS and 340 Nm of torque from 1,400 rpm.

The transmission in this case is thankfully one of the more advanced, modern units- a six speed conventional automatic transmission with Quickshift technology and manual override through paddle shifters. Drive is delivered exclusively to the front wheels – no all-wheel drive here – but that reaps its benefits in fuel consumption figures too.

In terms of the chassis, while this is a newer setup it retains much of the simplicity of French cars. That’s to say that you get an independent MacPherson strut front suspension design, and what is essentially a fancier torsion beam at the rear. Don’t be so quick to judge, however – if we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that French torsion beam setups are just built different. They offer the space advantages that a torsion beam brings, but they are engineered to deliver surprisingly agile handling characteristics.

Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Exterior

It can be a bit much to process what you’re looking at when you first lay your eyes on the Peugeot 3008 – but after a while you understand what the designers were going for. The styling elements from the rear look more modern-chic than you might expect from a French product, and the front end is a blend of aggression and futuristic design. You can get your Peugeot 3008 in five different colours: Pearl White, Perla Nera Black, Aster Grey, Cuprite Brown, and Amazonite Grey.

The wheels at each corner are 18-inch alloy units in the Los Angeles design. The headlights and taillights are LED units, with the rear packing the 3D claw effect marking a modern Peugeot product. The door handles are body coloured, while the roof is a contrasting black two-tone setup to the rest of the bodywork, and black plastic body cladding lines the lower extremities of the vehicle.

Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Interior

On the inside, you’re greeted with a very futuristic cockpit. The overarching layout of the dashboard may seem familiar with its centrally mounted floating display screen, but the gear lever is a combination of monostatic and traditional in positioning and shape, giving the centre console a unique look. There’s storage areas ahead, to the left, and behind the shift lever as well – with the cupholders and front storage being illuminated too. Interior tones are largely sombre coloured, with piano-style toggle switches for various functions finished in a satin chrome.

Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Safety Features

This particular variant of the Peugeot 3008 comes with a comprehensive list of safety equipment, both passive and active. You get six airbags, various ESP modes, hill descent control, hill start assist, electronic stability control and traction control, ABS with EBD and brake assist, as well as dynamic stability control. That being said, the advanced systems are a little light with only active lane keeping assist, speed limit recognition, and blind spot warning systems available.

Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Strengths & Weakness

There’s absolutely no doubt that there’s a lot to love about the Peugeot 3008 – in addition to being a unique left-field contender that is as far from the establishment as you could get, it also brings a bundles of French charm, aesthetics, and engineering that is impressive in its own right. From the way it drives, to the overall practicality and just the tactility of the materials and switchgear, you get an outright impressive experience.

That being said, there are things that the Peugeot 3008 has going against it and much of that stems from the brand’s history in Malaysia. Malaysians still have a level of distrust when it comes to these products as Peugeot’s older products were plagued with reliability issues – especially surrounding their older 1.6-litre turbocharged engines. Granted much of these issues have been ironed out over the years and generations, but it will take time to repair that relationship.

Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Price

Pricing for the singular variant of the Peugeot 3008 is RM 158,616.66 – on the road, without insurance. This is inclusive of all current exemptions – warranty and service terms may vary as this is still somewhat of a transitionary period.

Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Features

There are plenty of features to explore and discover with the Peugeot 3008. For the driver, the 12.3-inch digital heads up cluster display is a party piece, with four different designs to choose from in order to display what information is most important to you. The infotainment system is a reasonable 8-inch unit with Bluetooh and Apple Car Play connectivity, as well as Mirrorlink for other devices. There’s GPS navigation as standard, as well as the Arkamys 3D sound staging system. Automatic dual-zone climate control is standard, with rear-air conditioning vents as well. LED ambient lighting helps to set the mood when you’re on a night out in the town, and eight-way power-assisted drivers seats add a nice level of luxury. Want to carry some cold drinks? You have 11 litres of refrigerated storage space for that too.

Peugeot 3008 2021-2022 Fuel Consumption

The fuel consumption figure quoted by the manufacturer for the Peugeot 3008 is 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres, which translates to roughly 14.3 kilometres per litre of fuel burned. This can vary quite largely as this is a turbocharged car, meaning that if you spend more time driving aggressively your fuel consumption can ramp up quite rapidly.

Good looking car...

I have reservations about owning continental car before. My father used to own a Volvo back in the 80s when I seldom drove because of its size (not city friendly, mind you). But after owning a Peugeot I tend to change my mind about its performance. It's nothing I experience before! The drive is smooth and amazing... totally recommend it.. - Less
