Overview

The Proton Iriz is dubbed to be a game changer for the national carmaker. It was developed new from ground up with the aim to be sold worldwide. This locally built B-segment hatch competes with cars like the Perodua Myvi, Honda Jazz, Kia Rio, Ford Fiesta Sport, Mazda 2 Hatchback, and Peugeot 208 Puretech. Offered with two engine options, the car is priced between RM42,397 and RM 56,950.

As previously mentioned, two engines are available for customers to choose from. Both were developed specially for the Proton Iriz. The entry level naturally aspirated 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine outputs a modest 94 bhp and 120 Nm of torque. The higher displacement 1.6-litre mill, on the other hand, develops 107 bhp at 5,750rpm and 150 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The CVT automatic is available in both engine capacities. However, if you would like to shift the gears on your own, you are only limited to the 1.3 Standard variant.

As practiced in all new Proton models, the Iriz has standard fitment of ESC with hill start assist across the range.

A minor update of the Iriz in 2017 added new refinements developed for the Persona sedan that included improved CVT calibration and a switch from four- to three-point engine mounts. A streamlined range now offers only four variants - 1.3 Standard manual and CVT, 1.3 Executive CVT, and 1.6 Premium CVT.

The Premium CVT also looks much sportier, with its gloss black treatment on the roof, door mirrors and front grille, full bodykit in dual-tone colour, a larger rear spoiler and sporty front seats in combination leather covering.

The basic warranty coverage for Proton vehicles is 5 years or 150,000-kilometre mileage, whichever occurs first.

Review: New Proton Iriz 1.6L Premium CVT – Changes Where It Matters

On the inside changes are more subtle; the most notable highlight is the new analogue meter cluster with an LCD multi-information display. There’s also the seven-inch infotainment unit with the "Hi Proton" voice command. However, unlike the X70's more advanced system that can control the sunroof, windows, and air-conditioning, the Iriz’s unit is limited to music, weather forecast, and navigation features.

2017 Proton Iriz - Better Than Before

The Proton Iriz is no stranger to us. The car was launched back in 2014 and we have sampled the Iriz in various guises. From the Iriz, Proton developed the all-new Persona, and the company has implemented knowledge gained from the Persona back to the Iriz.

Proton Iriz 6 months review

overall a great car, just the CVT gear could be jerky and time, and acceleration from idle needs some adjusting as well. Exterior and interior are ok considering the price, and fuel consumption is on the higher end as compared to the Japanese brands - Less

Great value, very comfortable

Bought 1.3 Exec in June 2019, felt a good purchase then & now. 1 year later, still felt the car was a great purchase. Driving it feels solid, but at much lower cost. Comfort felt the same as my dad's new A45. Seating height is bit high, but it allows me to have better view on the road. Soundproofing also have so much improvement over previous iteration. Again, i can compare it to the A45. Iriz engineers also paid attention to detail, rear wiper automatically turns on when I put it in reverse mode during rain. Wiper also slows down when the vehicle stops. Really focused at attention to details. Vehicle excel at corners as the chassis felt stiff & solid. The only issue I faced so far is finding the correct window wind deflector. Buyers needs to aware that window deflector of 2012-2018 model cannot be fitted correctly on 2019 facelift version. CVT felt similar to Honda City CVT, which was bit lagged (about half a second) when we need to change gear. Driving Iriz with Punch CVT also needs time to adjust as I was used to drive Prius 2012. Hybrid cars have immediate high torque to move it from standstill. Hopefully Proton can adapt this technology in soon. - Less

Worth buying local car

Overall this car is nice to drive. The only negative side is the CVT gear which is slow in pick up. - Less

Call Me Stupid, but I love it : 2019 Proton Iriz

Love it or hate it, it is still rated as one of the best chassis that ever come out from our national carmaker. Now, with more features with reduce price compared to pre-facelift Iriz makes me triggered to own one after admiring it for years since its debut in 2014. Being one of the early bird to receive the facelifted Iriz makes people turns their heads whenever I drove by. It attracts some attention from the Malaysian as they wanted to know what are the contribution that Geely makes to our B-segment hatchback. Exterior wise, some people may say that it looks odd especially with the ethereal bow or the connected "eye brows". The concept to makes it looks bigger and wider works with a new improved bumper design. Interior wise, there's not much to complaint as the design already starting to looks a bit tired in certain area. The knob and switches feels a little bit well put together than before. The new meter cluster with white illuminating background does looks cool and premium but it seems to confuse me when it hits a direct sunlight, especially the temperature and fuel gauge, a tiny problem that need to be emphasize by Proton. The drivetrain much more improved than before. The lagging and slow reaction of the Punch CVT gearbox has been reduced tremendously by Proton. On highway it feels more refined and a lot more responsive, kudos to the engineering team. The ride and handling no need to be said, its always exhilarating for those who enjoys twist and turns like me, a fact well known by many Protonians. Should I recommended you to buy one? Yes. The end. - Less
