Overview

The Toyota Vios is one of the most popular B-segment sedan in Malaysia. It competes with likes of Honda City, Nissan Almera, Kia Rio Sedan, Volkswagen Vento, Mazda 2 Sedan also our very own Proton Persona. Toyota Malaysia offers the Vios in six variants, with the entry-level 2018 Toyota Vios 1.5J Manual starting at RM74,980, while the top of the range 1.5 TRD Sportivo will set you back RM93,980.

Powering the refreshed Vios range is the carmaker's new Dual VVT-i 2NR-FE unit that features variable valve timing on the exhaust side as well. All variants utilise a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with seven virtual ratios for manual selection, except for the entry-level 1.5J (M) variant, which uses a five-speed manual transmission.

The new naturally aspirated four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine outputs 107 PS at 6,000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque at 4,200rpm. According to Toyota's in-house data, the new engine and transmission combination is up to 18% more efficient than the powertrain it replaced (1NZ-FE + 4-speed auto). This combined figure is said to be under six litres per 100 kilometres travelled.

Standard features include ESC, smart entry and start system with remote trunk release, LED DRL, front parking sensors and front airbags. Higher priced variants include more features such as leather seat upholstery, touchscreen infotainment system with 6 speakers, reverse camera, steering wheel switches and an acoustic glass windshield.

Toyota offers plenty of customization options, including a segment-first panoramic view camera (360-degree bird's eye view), bodykit, auto-folding mirrors and display-audio system.

All new Toyota Vios comes with 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty, that is transferable to the next owner.

Those who are keen (and plenty of budget) can purchase a race-prepared Vios Challenge racer and participate in the one-make race series that races on temporary street circuits around Malaysia. All cars are prepared equally and scrutineered vigorously to ensure all cars are equal in engine output and the only difference is the driver's skill.

2016 Toyota Vios - Par for the Course

Just like the facelift for the previous generation Corolla Altis, this new Vios receives an entirely new powertrain. The newer generation engine has a higher compression ratio and variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust, while the severely outdated 4-speed automatic transmission has been replaced by a 7-“speed” CVT. Self-shifting aficionados can still purchase the basic Vios with a 5-speed manual transmission.
