Overview

The all-new Volkswagen Passat (B8) is officially sold here in three variants - 1.8 TSI Trendline, 1.8 TSI Comfortline and 2.0 TSI Highline priced from RM159,990 to RM198,990. The German sedan competes in the crowded D-segment with the likes of Mazda 6, Honda Accord, Kia Optima, Ford Mondeo, Chevrolet Malibu, Toyota Camry, Nissan Teana, and Hyundai Sonata.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) offers two turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines for the all-new Passat. The entry level 1.8-litre engine churns out 180 PS and 250 Nm of torque, while the 2.0-litre TSI unit is good for 220 PS and 350 Nm. If those numbers look familiar, they are, as these the exact same figures as the 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI hot hatchback.

The 1.8 TSI variant will wear the 280 TSI badge on the boot lid while the 2.0 TSI variants will wear 380 TSI. The numbers represent the individual variant’s position within the Passat family’s model hierarchy, and has little relation to their actual torque output.

Power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dry dual-clutch automatic transmission in the 1.8-litre variants, while the range topping engine is paired to a wet-type six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, tempered by Dynamic Chassis Control and XDS+. According to VPCM, the fuel consumption rating for the 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI powertrains are 5.7- and 6.2-litres per 100km respectively.

All new Volkswagen Passat purchased in 2018 comes with a free 3-year maintenance package, coupled with a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty coverage.

2017 Volkswagen Passat 1.8 TSI (B8) – An Unassuming Sleeper

The Americans call it sleeper cars. The Brits call it Q cars, in reference to heavily armed battle ships disguised as merchant ships used to fight the Germans during World War 2. Whichever term you choose to use, sleeper cars/Q cars follow the philosophy of “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”
