Key Highlights

One of the best cars around Excellent ride quality on the MQB platform Very refined, quiet interior
TSI + DSG powertrain both efficient and powerful Handling is one of the best in class 3-year free service, 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, 5-year roadside assistance

Volkswagen Malaysia has re-organized its model portfolio for the Golf VII by splitting its sole 1.4 TSI variant to two trim levels, both being offered at improved levels of equipment and features. They are:

1.4 TSI Sportline – RM155,990

1.4 TSI R-Line – RM166,990

The Sportline comes with 16-inch wheels, halogen headlamps, LED DRL, LED tail lamps, dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear vents, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 8 speakers and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, 7 airbags, fabric upholstery, and electronic parking brake with hold function.

For RM11,000 more, the R-line adds features like R-line kit which consists of bumpers, side skirts, front grille, rear spoiler and fender emblems, 17-inch wheels, dynamic cornering lamps, LED head lamps with dynamic range control, sequential-lighting indicators, and rear view camera.

The interior meanwhile adds niceties such as keyless entry and start, cruise control, 12.3-inch active info display, driving mode selection, door sill plates, and foot pedals in aluminium.

As with the current model, the facelift Golf VII for Malaysia is powered by Volkswagen’s latest EA211 1.4-litre TSI petrol direct injection engine. Outputs are 150 PS, which is accompanied by 250 Nm of torque available from 1,500 to 3,500rpm. Paired to the brand's now famous DSG dual-clutch transmission (dry-type) with seven ratios, the Golf 1.4TSI accelerates from rest to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and returns 5.2-litre/100 km of fuel consumption. Engine start-stop system with regenerative braking is also standard.

Meanwhile the sports car-teasing, segment-creator Golf GTI now has 230 PS / 350 Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged engine mated to a 6-speed DSG transmission (wet-type) providing propulsion to the front wheels. 0-100 km/h arrives in 6.4 seconds.  The GTI is known for its handling superiority thanks to a host of features, such as a more advanced electronic differential lock, 18-inch tires and wheels, quick ratio steering, and Dynamic Chassis Control with drive mode selector. The GTI is priced from RM239,990.

For those who still need more track-day items in their Golf and continue to aim for supercar-level lap times at Sepang circuit, there is the Golf R. 290 PS / 380 Nm outputs are transferred to a 7-speed DSG transmission and then to 4Motion all-wheel drive. This combination propels the Golf R from zero to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. The exhaust gases in the Golf R exit out through 4 tailpipes, compared to two in the GTI.

Higher cornering speed and stability is further attained through larger 19-inch x 8-inch wide wheels and 235/35R19 tyres. The Golf R also received a larger infotainment screen, increased to 9.2 inches and also fitted with a 10GB jukebox for audio file storage. The Golf R is priced from RM 295,990.

All new Volkswagen Golf models come with a free 3-year maintenance package, coupled with a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty coverage and 5-year roadside assistance.

Honest Ownership Experience: The Delightful Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk5

The thing that really attracted me to the car in the first place was the famous (or infamous) DSG (Dual Clutch Gearbox). I remember seeing a Japanese review of the car where they compared two Mk5 Golf GTIs against each other. One had a manual gearbox whilst the other had the DSG. My views on manual gearboxes changed permanently then as no matter how hard those professional Japanese race car drivers tried; the manual Mk5 could never beat the lap time of the DSG equipped Mk5. It was a revelation as I always thought a manual car would be better around a track.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 7.5 – The Challenge of Being No.1, Is Staying No.1 REVIEWS

There might be other more powerful hot/mega hatches out there, but the GTI is a good example that sometimes less is more, for none can match the GTI’s ability to wear multiple hats at a time. It can be your daily car, it can be your weekend track car, you can cruise for 800 km in a day, you decide.

Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI – Refining an Icon

The Golf 7 is an excellent car, be in no doubt about that. If the prospect of owning one fills you with trepidation, that’s understandable, but if you have the courage of taking a punt, you stand to be rewarded by a consummate all-rounder that transcends class and has talents so widely-spread

Mini GTi at premium quality with affordable price

Won't go wrong owning a Golf. Good handling, cornering especially, so far i dont see any car with the same segment can compete. Turbo kick in just in time when you want to overtake cars, great day to day drive, practical car, great all rounder. - Less

Driving a golf is an exciting experience, of course there's better cars but in this category i would say golf comes up top! And i only had the TSi Highline. Cant even imagine the sweet adrenaline if i was driving the GTi or R model. The car and the driver feels very connected as the car responds to your manoeuvre smoothly. The seat hugs you comfortably, a perfect midway between bucket seat and the normal seat if you know what i mean. Changing lanes or taking over another car have never felt so easy as i know exactly what the golf can do for me. I never doubted myself when i was driving the golf. It gives me confidence as a driver. The only thing lacking is the interior space which is perfect for 2 people sitting up front. But a bit cramped at the back. So families beware, this is not one for a big family. The media interface is smart but basic. But i like that it can connect multiple phones simultaneously. So two of our phones are always connected for bluetooth features at the same time. But again if you're buying a car for its "smart media" features, then look elsewhere. You buy a GOLF for the pleasure of driving. Thats why it is the no 3 best selling car WORLDWIDE. - Less
