  • 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan
    RM 1,757/Month RM 165,990

Key Highlights

Turbocharged engine, low road tax Android Auto & Apple Car Play compatibility Superior driving dynamics and comfort
Only car in this price range with 12.3-inch meter display Highline has plenty of features 5-year free service, 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, 5-year roadside assistance

The first generation Tiguan was a lovely car, but it was also similar to the Golf in many ways save for the ride height and a slightly redesigned interior.

In a market that’s dominated by the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V, the Tiguan never made a strong enough dent into the Japanese-controlled fort. Initially offered with only a 2.0 TSI turbocharged engine from the Golf GTI, the Tiguan was priced on the wrong side of the RM200,000 divide. The introduction of a 1.4 TSI version brought prices down to RM 189,000, is front-wheel driven instead all four, had a less powerful 1.4 TSI Twin Charged engine and loses leather upholstery.

This second-generation Tiguan is a proper change over its Golf sibling, despite sitting on the same MQB platform. It's an excellent package and product.

The new Tiguan will be assembled at Pekan and benefits from EEV incentives, thus, offering a price of just under RM 150,000.

Two trim levels are offered here - the entry Comfortline and the range-topping Highline. Both Tiguan variants are powered by the same 1.4-litre TSI mated to a six-speed wet clutch DSG dual clutch automatic transmission that delivers 150 PS and 250 Nm to the front wheels. The Tiguan is able to hit 100 km/h from a standstill in just 8.9 seconds, before reaching a maximum velocity of 198 km/h.

Standard features for the 1.4TSI Comfortline, priced from RM 149,578, includes halogen DRL, black roof rails, 17-inch wheels, fabric seat upholstery, 8-inch infotainment system with 8 speakers, rear seat-back retractable tables and cupholders, automatic air conditioning with rear console vents, and an electric parking brake with hill-hold function.

For RM 20,000 more, the Highline adds many exterior features which makes it more premium-looking, such as LED headlamps, chrome roof rails, and 18-inch wheels. Inside, the driver will be greeted to a segment-only 12.3-inch digital display meter (the entire combination meter is just a large high-resolution screen), 3-zone air conditioning control, powered driver's seat adjustment with memory function, reverse camera, leather upholstery, powered tailgate and App-Connect, which brings Mirror Link, Android Auto and Apple Car Play compatibility on an upgraded 8-inch infotainment unit.

All new Volkswagen Tiguan purchased in 2018-2019-2020 comes with a free 3-year maintenance package, coupled with a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty coverage.

2017 Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 TSI – Last Chance Hero

The all-new MQB platform Volkswagen Tiguan is one car that Volkswagen desperately needs to make sure that it gains traction in Malaysia. Beset by a string of image denting quality issues in the past, Wolfsburg’s pride in their German engineering heritage is a sentiment that’s not shared among Malaysians.

You should shortlist it!

I owned this car for a year now and overall I will give it a 3/5. Performance wise is adequate and you able to cruise comfortably on the highway. Wind noise is noticeable once you hit 120 km/h. Interior design wise is a bit dated compared to it's Japanese rival like cx5 or crv. I would give it credit for safety as it feels solid and tougher. Last but not least, I felt the exterior is timeless with its masculine front looks and neat rear looks. Final advise, you should go and give it a test drive to fully understand the features. The choice is yours! Cheers! - Less
