Volvo Car, as a brand, has seen better days. There was a time when the Swedish brand was the default choice of many working professionals. In Malaysia, the brand enjoyed a premium image and right up to the '80s, the Volvo 240-series was perceived more favourably than a BMW 3-series.

The '90s was a dark period for the brand but that is all behind it now.

Volvo Cars Malaysia launched their entry-model - the C-segment hatchback Volvo V40 series back in 2013. The all-new V40 rides on a new development of the now discontinued S40 sedan's platform. It is also the last Volvo model to be developed in co-operation with Ford. Interestingly, Volvo Car Malaysia confirmed that the S40 sedan has been discontinued globally, and the Volvo 40-series model will now be exclusively a hatchback only line-up.

For 2018, two variants are on offer, the T4 and the T5, with prices of RM163,888 and RM180,888 respectively.

Both variants are powered by the Drive-E 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The outputs and transmission varies on both variants, with the T4 having outputs of 190 hp and 300 Nm of torque mated to a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The T5 meanwhile gets a higher state-of-tune, to the order of 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque and mated to a 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Standard items in both variants include: City Safety autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, 7 airbags, LED head lights, welcome light, aluminum interior trim, leather upholstery, power adjustable front seats with driver memory, 60:40-split folding rear seats, and dual zone automatic air conditioning with clean zone air quality system. Both variants come with a high performance audio system with 8 speakers and Bluetooth streaming.

The T5 adds a R-Design styling package that consists of front grille, bumpers and exhaust tailpipes, 17-inch wheels, 8-inch digital instrument display, keyless entry and drive, additional parking sensors upfront, and a larger 7-inch touch screen display.

All new Volvo models come with 5 years or 120,000 km warranty.

2017 Volvo V40 Polestar Performance Edition - Turning It Up To (Almost) Eleven

Volvo’s relationship with Polestar goes back a couple of decades, but the Swedish tuning house has only recently been brought into the limelight as Volvo strengthens their ties with them and provides more manufacturer support. In return, Polestar offers upgrades for nearly every car in their product range (which isn’t too difficult considering the common engine architecture between them). The V40 is one of three models in Malaysia to receive the Polestar Performance Optimization packages.
