Overview

Mazda’s entry to the D-segment is the Mazda6. The Mazda6 has the most diverse line-up in the segment, that includes a sexy-looking station wagon/touring body type and also an option of a modern diesel engine.

Competition for this model comes in the form of the Honda Accord, Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Camry, Peugeot 508 THP, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, and Nissan Teana.

The Mazda6, fully-imported from Japan, comes with a choice of three engines- two petrol and one diesel. The entry to the Mazda6 range is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that is found in the Mazda3, CX-5 and CX-3 but at a different tune of 153 hp and 200 Nm of torque. The 2.5-litre develops 185 hp and 250 Nm of torque from a practical engine speed of 3,250 rpm.

The 2.2-litre diesel, called SkyActiv-D is another technological marvel, with the lowest compression ratio for any diesel engine at 14:1. Power output is 173 hp at 4,500 rpm and a great amount of torque (420 Nm) from 2,200 rpm.

All three engines are mated to the company’s SkyActiv 6-speed torque converter automatic that drives the front wheels.

With a starting price of RM165,518, the standard features in the Mazda6 2.0 include 17-inch wheels with 225/55 tyres, idle start-stop system, GVC, halogen head lamps with automatic function, LED tail lamps, , electronic parking brake, power adjusting front seats with driver memory function, MZD 7-inch infotainment system with touchscreen, Bluetooth streaming audio, 6 speakers, and 60:40-split folding rear seats with a folding armrest.

Safety features in the large sedan include 6 airbags, ESP, hill start assist, and reverse camera.

The Mazda6 variants with the larger 2.5-litre petrol engine and Station Wagon/Touring body type as well as the 2.2-litre Diesel all share the same high-level features and equipment- 19-inch wheels with 225/45 tyres, LED head lamps, keyless entry, paddle shift switches, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power adjustable driver’s seat, BOSE Surround sound system with 11 speakers, and the Advance Safety Technology package that includes: adaptive headlamps, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The 2.5-litre sedan is priced from RM201,007 and the Touring from RM 205,007. The diesel Mazda6 2.2 SkyActiv-D is the priciest of all Mazda sedans, priced from RM209,190. Bermaz recommends users to only use Euro 5 diesel in the SkyActiv-D, as the modern diesel engine requires low sulphur content (10 mg/kg vs. 500 mg/kg in Euro 2 fuel).

All new Mazda vehicles are entitled to a 5 Years/100,000km Manufacturing Warranty and 3 Years/60,000km Free Maintenance according to manufacturer’s standards. Mazda customers will enjoy an absolute 3-year free scheduled maintenance; including labour, parts, and lubricants.
