Peugeot 5008 2021-2022 Review
If there’s anything that you could say about French automotive manufacturers, it’s that they are incredibly stubborn and stuck in their ways. The best example of this is the fact that they put a lot of focus on their manual transmission design and development – and rightly so as manual transmission take-up rates are much higher in Europe. Unfortunately this also means that the automatic transmission is often an afterthought to them, something that was hardly developed and often problematic or lacklustre.
This also became a problem because domestic of European markets alone don’t function as a large enough customer base for a modern automaker. In order for them to succeed they have to go global, and that means catering to the needs of car buyers in a range of different markets. Eventually this meant that automatic transmissions had to evolve to be as good as their manual counterparts in French products.
This stubbornness also translates to the development of models, especially models that aren’t exactly conventional or historical for the brand. In the case of Peugeot, that big step was stepping away from making hatchbacks, sedans, and wagons, and introducing the SUV. In the past, Peugeot has had some experience in making reasonable MPVs, but their first foray into crossovers and SUVs came in the form of the Peugeot 4007 – which was essentially a rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander.
Following the success of this, they released the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 as global SUV products among their range. The Peugeot 5008 was the larger of the two models, initially regarded and classified as an MPV but eventually becoming a compact crossover SUV as it had both five and seven seater variants on sale. The first generation was in production from 2009 to 2016, while the much-more SUV-esque second generation was first introduced in 2017 and continues until today.
In Malaysia this second generation Peugeot 5008 was introduced back in 2018 in a handful of variants, but as the years passed and stewardship of the Peugeot brand has changed, the variants have been pared down to a singular option.
Peugeot 5008 2021-2022 Specifications
A singular variant of the Peugeot 5008 on offer means a singular powertrain – not that it means much when it comes to Peugeot because you’re usually limited to either a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine, a turbocharged version of that engine, or a 2.2-litre turbodiesel motor. In this case the Peugeot 5008 is powered by the most current generation of the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which makes a healthy 167 PS and 240 Nm of torque.
This engine family technically dates back a fairly long way, although minor improvements over the years have helped it to remain relevant and meet more modern and stringent emissions standards. Twin-scroll high-pressure turbochargers with direct injection really made a big leap in terms of driveability and response, in combination with good old variable valve timing to help broaden the torque band.
Between the engine and the front wheels is a six-speed conventional automatic transmission – one of the more modern units from Peugeot as we mentioned, bearing little resemblance to the awful automatic transmission of old. There is an emphasis on efficiency here, as well as Quickshift technology and paddle shifters to offer you gear control overrides and give you better control over the powertrain.
Other mechanical elements are par for the course for a Peugeot product. Ventilated discs up fornt and solid discs at the rear, independent MacPherson strut front axle design combined with a rear torsion beam axle, and electrically assisted power steering. Dimensionally the Peugeot 5008 measures in at 4,670 mm, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,655 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,840 mm.

You can get your Peugeot 5008 in five different colours – Emerald Crystal is the only non-monochrome variant, with Amazonite Grey, Pearl Nera Black, Pearl White, and Aster Grey representing the black, white, and in-between tones.
18-inch wheels sit at each corner in the Detroit design, with alloy construction and composition. LED headlights, front fog lights, sequential front indicators, and 3D claw effect tail lights are all part of the package, providing an excellent modern look and feel for the exterior of the Peugeot 5008.
Peugeot 5008 2021-2022 Interior
Our local singular variant of the Peugeot 5008 is available as a seven seater, meaning it has a three-row setup. In terms of the overall layout, you have an extremely modern setup akin to most other Peugeot models – though perhaps not as outright breath-taking as the upcoming Peugeot 508. An infotainment system sits front and centre, high on the dashboard. The driver gets eight-way power adjustable seats, while the passenger gets six-way power adjustable seats. The overall tones are dark, with black Claudio leather wrapping the seats and other soft touch points, in contrast to piano keys finished in satin chrome.
Peugeot 5008 2021-2022 Safety Features
It can be difficult to rationalize that a car in this day and age doesn’t have more advanced safety systems, but one has to remember that that Peugeot 5008 was built and developed before advanced systems become more integrated and commonplace. The most advanced item in terms of safety is the active lane keep assist along with the blind spot information system, but for the most part the safety items are things like electronic stability and traction control, ABS with EBD and brake assist, and the like.
Peugeot 5008 2021-2022 Strengths & Weakness
The strongest element of the Peugeot 5008 is like most other modern Peugeot products – the design. Both inside and out are immaculate and eye-catching, with design that remains unmatched by anything short of a true luxury brand (or Mazda). It makes for a good value for money proposition, and a car that you won’t grow tired of or resent as you use it.
Unfortunately, ownership of the Peugeot 5008 means contending with the questions of why you chose a Peugeot – something that the brand has worked hard to try and overcome, and will undoubtedly be able to under their new stewardship in Malaysia. Aftersales and service were once a concern, but new customers shouldn’t be worried at all.
Peugeot 5008 2021-2022 Price
The singular variant of the Peugeot 5008 here is known as the Allure 7-Seater, and it goes for RM 173,311.90 inclusive of the current exemptions in place by the Malaysian government until the end of the year. There is no word on whether there will be additional variants introduced over time, although Peugeot’s presence and growth here may indicate this is in the cards in the future.
Peugeot 5008 2021-2022 Features
There are plenty of items that the Peugeot 5008 comes with from factory, which has been one of the strengths of Peugeot’s product line-up in Malaysia. A 12.3-inch digital heads up cluster display (rather, the instrument cluster) occupies most of the driver’s forward vision, with different drive modes to suit the situation and preferences of the driver. The infotainment head unit is an eight-inch touch screen piece, with Apple CarPlay and Mirrorlink connectivity in addition to Bluetooth.
In terms of sound reproduction, Peugeot’s partnership with Arkamys continues here with their 3D sound staging system. An automatic electric parking brake frees up space in the centre console, and automatic dual-zone climate control with rear air-cond vents help to keep both drivers and passengers comfortable throughout their journey.
Peugeot 5008 2021-2022 Fuel Consumption
The manufacturer quoted fuel consumption figure for the Peugeot 5008 in our Malaysian variant is based on European testing cycles and data, which is 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres in a combined urban and extra-urban test cycle. This translates to roughly 14.3 kilometres per litre of petrol. Being a turbocharged car, this figure can swing quite wildly depending on the conditions and the way in which you drive, meaning that if you’re constantly accelerating hard or sustaining higher speeds you will find much higher fuel consumption figures.
