Key Highlights

Easier to get in and out than a 3 Series More spacious than before Rugged looks, like a 'fitter' X5
More spacious than similarly priced rivals Although front-drive, still maintains 90% of BMW stability/familiarity 5-year warranty with free service by BMW

Overview

Codenamed the F48, the new second-generation X1 is the first existing BMW model range to adopt a transverse engine layout, similar to the newly minted front-wheel drive 2 Active Tourer and 2 Grand Tourer model range. Unlike its predecessor, this all new X1 didn’t have to live with a longitudinal engine that limited cabin space and lent it a strange proportion. Instead this new X1 looks like a junior X5 with its balanced design proportions and better still, a spacious cabin for all occupants.

The locally-assembled X1 sDrive20i is priced from RM230,800.

According to BMW, the X1 now stands 53mm taller than its predecessor, which allows the seating position to be heightened by 40mm, offering occupants with a better all-round visibility as befitting of an SUV.

Despite being marginally shorter, BMW says that an additional 37mm of rear legroom have been carved out, while boot space has been increased by 85 litres to 505 litres. However if you need more space, the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats can boost cargo capacity to a rather commodious 1,550 litres.

Powering the sole X1 variant offered by BMW Malaysia is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. Outputs are 192 hp and 280 Nm, with the power transmitted to the front wheels via an all-new 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission, hence the variant name sDrive20i.

Standard features in the X1 include: 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, black roof rails, powered tail gate, powered driver's seat adjustment with memory function, rear seat with 40:20:40 split folding, BMW ConnectedDrive services, and an infotainment system with 6.5-inch featuring touch screen, navigation and iDrive controller.

All mainstream BMW models sold by BMW Malaysia come with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty that is manufacturer backed, and the program includes free scheduled service and maintenance of up to 100,000km. The warranty program is in accordance with the BMW Condition Based Service (CBS) status, which includes a service vehicle check, engine oil service, oil filter and refill quantity.

For components covered within the program, air filters, fuel filters, micro filters, spark plugs and brake fluid are all included – front and rear brakes, inclusive of discs and pads, and windscreen wipers have been excluded.

F48 BMW X1 Malaysia Review – Radical product rethink

Being introduced only as recently as 2010, the X1 is a relatively new member of BMW’s range. Yet, with 730,000 examples sold worldwide in a six-year model cycle, the X1 has firmly established itself as a vital cog in BMW’s global model line-up.

Satisfaction with overall performance and ride

So far has been a good experience. Wish the car with the price tag to have more modern safety like Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring for its sheer size etc. - Less

Great drive, but missing out on spec

X3 G01 model that is smooth and powerful. Wonderful combination of engine and transmission makes this SUV a pleasant drive in almost any conditions. Interior quality is top notch and fittings cannot be faulted. Almost perfect, but at nearly RM320k, I would expect features that are already in SUVs way below that price, such as 360 degree parking aid, blind spot information system, active cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking. - Less
